About the Project

Harrison Canning and Colin Fausnaught founded the Neurotechnology Exploration Team (NXT) in fall of 2018. It is the first student-run research group to receive funding and recognition by RIT in the University’s history. The organization has set out to develop assistive technology suites to help persons with neuromuscular disorders communicate and move using neurotechnology based solutions, namely electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG).

This mission inspired many students from both RIT and the University of Rochester to join its cause with over 30 active researchers and 50 participants at its height. NXT has worked on several projects, including a motor imagery based control system used for wheelchair and keyboard control, cheap EMG prosthetics, advanced fabric electrodes, and assistive EMG games. The group has presented at many events, including being invited out to the 2019 Dubai International Maker Faire where presenters won a Maker of Merit Award, In addition, NXT was approved for large-scale human subject testing, recognized by RIT and several outlets for its excellence and innovative structure, and spawned the course Introduction to Neurotechnology for Biomedical Engineers, which runs every spring.
